Think there’s not much to do in the old but gold estate of Choa Chu Kang? Think again! Home to nature spots, worthy causes, and teeming with exciting activities, there’s more to this neighbourhood than the similar-sounding television character.

1. Hang out at Lot One

Prefer unwinding with some retail therapy instead? Take a trip down to Lot One, the heartland mall where shoppers can catch a movie, nosh on refreshing dessert at Blackball, check out books at the Choa Chu Kang Community Library – the list goes on. An iconic stalwart that’s become synonymous with Choa Chu Kang itself, Lot One was built in 1997 and is showing no signs of slowing down anytime soon.

How to get there: Alight from Choa Chu Kang MRT. It is a 2-minute walk from there.

2. Visit animals up for adoption at Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA)

Hang out and play with adorable furbabies in need of a forever home at SPCA’s new home in Sungei Tengah Road. If you love spending time with animals, drop in and give these animals the love and attention they deserve. If you’re lucky, a volunteer will be there to tell you the story of how they ended up in the SPCA. Who knows, maybe you’ll even get to meet the right one and bring home a new best friend!

How to get there: Take bus 975 from the bus stop opposite Lot One.

3. Sip on teh tarik at the park

Choa Chu Kang is home to many hawker centres and eateries that’s a testament to how rich and diverse our local food scene is. Here’s our pick that stands out from the rest: Mr Teh Tarik Cartel’s new premises in Choa Chu Kang Park. Open for 24 hours, this popular Indian Muslim and Tzi Char style food joint is the perfect place to get your midnight prata fix.

How to get there: It is a 6-minute walk from Choa Chu Kang MRT, exit C.

4. Catch a movie under the stars

That’s right, outdoor movie screenings exist outside of Sentosa and the Botanic Gardens. You’ll be able to watch films literally right around the corner from your home as the traveling Movie Bus could pop up at void decks and other heartland spaces islandwide. Recently, the Chua Chu Kang Zone 4 Residents’ Committee organised a free movie screening at the open space beside Block 203A. Be sure to keep up to date on the next screening by checking out their Facebook page.

5. Take a scenic walk

Nature lovers, be spoiled for choice! One thing you’ll notice about this neighbourhood is the abundance of parks. There are 3 to choose from, namely Choa Chu Kang Park, Limbang Park and Villa Verde Park. Strap on a pair of running shoes and take off on a run. If you and your family love spending quality time outdoors, the park is a perfect place for activities like bike riding, skating, rollerblading, bird watching – you name it!

How to get there: Both Choa Chu Kang Park and Limbang Park take about 7-8 minute walk from Choa Chu Kang MRT, exit C. To get to Villa Verde Park, take bus 927 from the Interchange.

Who says old-timey neighbourhoods are boring? Choa Chu Kang, and many non-mature HDB estates like it, are teeming with hidden gems that are just waiting to be discovered!
