Why Bukit Merah?

The name Bukit Merah came about after red soil was uncovered when the area was excavated in the 1950s. In Malay, Bukit Merah means “red hill”. In Hokkien, the area is known as ang suah, which also means “red hill”.

Along Jalan Bukit Merah stands the Silat Road Sikh Temple. It has the largest palki or “palanquin”, the Sikh Holy Book, weighing 10 tonnes and measuring 3 m long, 1.5 m wide and 4 m high. The dome, with a diameter of 10 m, is the world’s largest for Sikh temples. Originally built in 1924, the temple draws devotees from around the world.

Transportation

There are currently 5 MRT stations that serve Bukit Merah across 3 lines, the East West Line, Circle Line and North East Line.
These are:

  • CC27 Labrador Park
  • CC28 Telok Blangah
  • NE1, CC29 HarbourFront

There are two bus interchanges and one bus terminal in the new town.

Any Future Plans for Bukit Merah?

In the near future, the Outram Park MRT station will serve as an interchange to connect the Thomson Line to the East-West and North-East lines.

Future stations that are currently under construction include:

  • TE16 Havelock
  • CC30 Keppel
  • CC31 Cantonment

Havelock MRT Station of the Thomson-East Coast Line, that will be operational in 2021, is situated near to the Bukit Ho Swee estate, making Bukit Merah as the second with the most number of MRT lines passing through it, following the Central Area. The future stations, Keppel and Cantonment will be located within the new town as part of Stage 6 of the Circle Line that will be completed by 2025.

As part of the government’s move to promote a car-lite Singapore, more inter-town cycling routes will be built to allow cyclists to travel from the east of the island to the west by cycling from Geylang and Marine Parade to Queenstown and Bukit Merah.
